The biggest misconception of branding.
When it comes to building a brand, businesses, and companies primarily start to focus on visuals—creating visuals for your company to look beautiful and trustful, like focusing on the logo, style, design, social media posts, etc. These tactics create only an illusion of who you are, but it doesn't say who you actually are. In the end, those will get only frustrate customers. It sucks!
Visuals need to be transparent and based on real values, actual works that will show a real you and your work. By real you I mean the value, mission, and quality you deliver through your work and professionalism. People will associate you with negative or positive experiences when they see your visuals.
As Simon Sinek mentioned in his book called "Why", he stated that:
" Most companies have logos, but few have been able to convert those logos into meaningful symbols. A symbol cannot have any deep meaning until we know WHY it exists in terms of bigger than simply to identify the company. Without clarity of WHY, a logo is just a logo. But when a logo becomes a symbol-it no longer identifies a company and its products, it identifies a belief".
That is why visuals like logos and designs are the last thing that you have to work on.
The authentic way of building a brand is not visuals and numbers, it is how you constantly show up and solve problems, your professionalism, and how you create a positive impact. People start to notice you by your actions, not by your visuals. If you make them feel in a certain positive way, they will remember you despite your logo being black color or upside down.
But a brand becomes a brand when society says so, not when the business says it.
When it comes to considering brand building, many businesses don't pay attention to whether they are making a negative impact or a positive one. Some might be hooked on incentives, and systematized way of delivering their work that creates toxicity.
Let's take building a brand In Social Media.
Do you think the number of followers is important? It depends on what kind of business or services you do. For some businesses, it might be important. But it is not about the number of followers, it is about loyalty. Your followers are those to whom you made a personal impact and met face to face and they got interested in you, took action asked for your contacts, and now they frequently check on you on Social media. They are the one who engages with your business through social media constantly.
Here I want to simplify and sum up for you.
The visuals of your brand are just the way they will recognize you.
But how they will recognize you by your visuals goes to your actions, some sort of actions that made them feel in a certain way and they will remember you and it goes to their emotions. What kind of emotional impact did you make on them that they felt satisfied with your service or product?
Your visuals might cause positive or negative perceptions based on your actual work and the actions that you made. Or they might not even remember or recognize you by your visuals because you didn't impress them and they forgot you already no matter how interesting content you are creating!
